2009 Poppy Appeal under way / Chiang Mai are now an official Sub Branch BR3625

Welcome to the Royal British Legion Thailand website, before becoming part of the Legion family we were called Pattaya Veterans and met in Tropical Bert's every Sunday. We still meet there and as you can see by all the military Bric a Brac this has become our home.

Unlike most UK branches we don't have a County to cover but a Country so it has been a relief for our welfare team by opening a Sub branch in Chiang Mai and we hope another in Korat soon.

Please feel free to join us any Sunday from 2pm at Tropical Bert's on 2nd

road, opposite the Bangkok bank. For any enquiries please phone me on 089 8072335.

Remembrance Day 2009

Once again the Royal British Legion Thailand travelled to the British Embassy for Remembrance Sunday, we arrived from all corners of Thailand a total of 65 in all. We once again met our good friends from the Far East Prisoners of War Association. The Parade was outstanding thanks to Mark Watson and his team from the Embassy. After, it was of course quick march to the Ambassadors garden for refreshments, we then had an added bonus this year in that myself and our President Graham Macdonald had arranged the use of the Embassy Social Club for 2 hours, not only that but Mackenzie Smith Law sponsored 20.000 Bahts worth of drink. The Banjo was soon being played by Chris along with songs of old, and, as we had arranged for the Pipers to join us during earlier rehearsals it was soon a free for all of wannabe singers and Highland Dancers. Our thanks of course to Mackenzie Smith Law for kindly sponsoring us and also the Social Club staff for putting up with us!

A Happy Group of Legionnaires

After the Embassy it was on the bus and home to Pattaya ( we wont mention the Ladies singing!!) where another nice surprise awaited us, waiting for us was President Graham Macdonald with 5,000 Baht for the bar, I also had 5,000 Baht from Asia West Fine Foods and along with Free Curry the Banjo was soon out again!!!

A selection of Remembrance Photo's

Last ones standing, thanks to Asia West

Loy Krathong Festival 2009

Those of you who have been in Thailand during the Loy Krathong Festival will know it is one of the most colourful events in the Thai Calendar, Thais in their national costumes all heading for the beach as darkness falls to place their Krathongs (Floats made from banana leafs) into the sea and watch them float away. There are many stories as to the origin of this, to float away your troubles being one or in memory of your loved ones another. The festival is a calendar one depending on the cycle of the moon as to what day it is held, this year it fell within Remembrancetide and so we made our own Krathong from poppies and our Thai friends took it to the beach for us, it floated away, just as it should have done but for our own reasons "In memory of all, who gave all"

Our Krathong and a normal one

HRH Prince Andrews Visit

We were honoured recently to be invited to a BCCT event in Bangkok in the presence of Prince Andrew. on seeing this fine body of men, along with Bob's belly he turned to his aid and said "I could be here for a while!"
